One can recognize "Jane" by her taste in, especially older, men, many of them classic fictional characters, as well as her distinct fear of drama class auditions. | Does anyone know any ways of getting rid of it? I have to perform a scene from Our Town for my exam next week (horribly enough, I got stuck with the hardest scene and the hardest character in the entire play because my drama teacher has "confidence" in me or whatever), and I'm really not sure if I can do it. I have a problem with my hands and legs shaking (very noticeably) and my face blushing.  . It's so bad that when I did my monologue I had to stop three times and get two hugs to get my anxiety under control. When I'm not nervous I do fine, but it's hard not to be in that class. Any ideas or advice? Or should I just "get sick" on the day of the exams? | |

| The best thing to do is to read your piece out loud over and over again, more than is necessary. Read it out loud so much that you're practically sick to death of it. Then, when it comes time to perform in front of people, it seems like a regular, mundane thing. I used to be very shy and suffer from stage fright, but over the past two years, I've gotten over it completely. The method above was one of the best that helped me out. | I agree with Tourterelle. Repeat it over and over. Repeat it in the morning, repeat it before you go to bed, repeat it in the shower. I, even if I've memorized it perfectly well, personally have much trouble getting lines out of my mouth if I haven't repeated the lines over and over twenty billion times. I had that problem with my first audition.
This is going to sound cliche and cheesy, but try to get into character. Focus on the character so much that only her world exists, and not the world where the audience is.

| I was in choir for 3 years and while I didn't have stage fright as bad as you, I still had it. My best trick was to NEVER look AT the audience. I would look over them at the back wall and fix my eyes on a point on the wall. That was my best trick. Generally speaking, unless the audience is filled with a bunch of Greek Adonis' it would be a frightening thing to picture an audience in their undies. Good Luck! I am sure you will do great.  | |
